Here’s an old story from back in the day...
On a dark and stormy night, just before midnight, in December of 1992, a ferocious Nor’easter was blowing across the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland. Gale force winds were knocking down trees and power lines throughout the community, plunging the neighborhood into total darkness. The driving rain was slamming sideways against the buildings and windows. Waves were crashing over the piers and bulkhead... A real howler...
Around midnight, near Poole's Island, a tugboat captain put out a distress call. His tugboat, towing oyster barges, was in distress, taking on water and in danger of sinking. The five 195-foot barges were dragging the tug down. The captain put out the call, cut the five large barges loose, and ran for shelter. With the help of the high winds and driving surf, the barges quickly and quietly made their way across the bay to the Island View...
When they landed, we could hear the splintering wood, snapping piling, and piers being ripped apart. But all we could see, in the dark, was a solid black wall with flickering kerosene lamps pushing closer and closer toward the restaurant... We had no idea what "beast" was crushing the piers and slamming against the bulkhead, Boom... Boom... Booming... as they pounded the rocks... These 195-foot "monsters" surrounded us, blocked the storm, and created a freaky, hair-raising quiet...
After sending Melissa out into the storm, to investigate... Just kidding! :)
A quick call to the U.S. Coast Guard solved the mystery and reported the location of the wayward barges to their owner. By noon, the "things" were on their way to their home port, leaving behind a mess. In a few weeks, the barge owners sent a crew to rebuild the piers, and by Christmas, everything returned to normal.
'Merry Christmas 1992'!
